Education Scholar: Module 1 - Developing a Personal Working Philosophy to Guide Teaching/Learning in Health Professions Education
Module Overview
Introduction
The design of the Education Scholar program is based on a philosophy known as 'Scholarship of Teaching and Learning,' a concept that was articulated in 1990 by the late Dr. Ernest Boyer of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Since that time, many institutions of higher learning have adopted this philosophy to promote teaching as an important component of an academic career. We created this module to help you learn more about the concept of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and explore its relevance to your own academic career. In the process, we hope you will learn something about your personal philosophy of teaching, and develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to assess and build upon your own teaching accomplishments.
Purpose and Objectives
This module provides opportunities for you to identify your own beliefs, values, and biases about the educational process, in hopes that you will be better prepared to address the challenges you face in your teaching environment. By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Describe the concept of "teaching scholarship", and its relationship to the changing higher education environment and your own academic career.
- Develop a personal "working" philosophy to guide your teaching efforts and facilitate student learning.
- Explore traditional philosophies of education as they relate to your own teaching approach.
- Explain the importance of establishing a teaching portfolio for self-improvement, as well as to support promotion and tenure decisions.
- Begin preparing your own teaching portfolio to document your own performance and progress as a health professions educator.
- Appreciate the importance of continuous improvement in your role as a health professions educator.
